LIFE UPDATE!
1. i’ve officially graduated from college. i now have two associate degrees, one in fashion illustration and one in communication design. while modern society has tried to convince me that i can’t do anything in life unless i have a bachelors degree, i’ve decided that i would benefit more from internships and work experience than another two years in school. so i’m done.
2. next week i start two internships along with keeping my part time job at apple. one is unpaid at would you rock this, an online fashion illustration community. i’m going to be helping with site design and preparation for a fashion illustration exhibit at the brooklyn library this fall. the other internship is paid and full-time, as a graphic design intern at west elm’s corporate office in brooklyn. this is SUPER exciting since it perfectly blends my love of graphic design and interior design. i’ll be working on the website, catalog, packaging, email blasts, etcetera. and i get to bike to work! dream job.
3. even though i’ve discussed it on facebook and twitter i don’t think i ever discussed it here: my kickstarter project was successfully funded, and nate and i were contacted by no starch press (a publisher in san francisco) who wants to publish our book. we signed a contract last week so we now have a book deal! we’ll be working on it all summer, and hopefully it will be in bookstores across the country this winter. we’re ecstatic; it’s incredible that our little project will be something anyone can pick up in barnes and noble. totally not what we were expecting.
4. i turn 23 in july, and a couple of days after that i run out of queued content for kim gee comics. i’m considering taking a summer sabbatical from comics to focus on my (three!) jobs, but i have a feeling i won’t be able to go very long without starting a new project. i’m thinking about dabbling in fiction since i might have exhausted writing about my personal life. i want to get back to my illustration roots, start working with brush and ink again, start really spending time on my comics. the sketchbook style has served me well thus far, but i’m ready to buckle down and sweat over making comics. it’s time.
5. life is good, basically.

guest starring tofu the dog!
my graduation gift to myself, done at 1228 tattoo with drew linden.
it’s based on vasily kandinksky’s several circles, which i first encountered at the guggenheim museum when i was 16. towards the end of high school kevin and i started taking the train into the city for day trips where we would wander around, go to shows, and absorb some culture. we ended up at the guggenheim a few times and always got stuck on that big gorgeous painting. when i look at it now it reminds me of how i felt at 16, anxious to explore and in complete awe of my surroundings. here’s hoping i can hold on to that feeling for as long as i have the tattoo.
still in love with this view. (Taken with instagram)
today marks four years working under this glass cube. oddly enough it’s been the only consistent thing in my life since high school. (Taken with instagram)
i love my mom.
- me: just letting you know, i'm going to have another tattoo the next time you see me. it's a graduation gift to myself.
- mom: where is it?
- me: it's a surprise!
- mom: just tell me where it is so i know what to expect. is it on your face?
- me: yes mom, i always wanted a face tattoo.
- mom: on your neck?
- me: not on my neck, not on my hands, it'll be hidden by a three quarter sleeve shirt.
- mom: okay. fine. well, congratulations.
